“Singers Wanted” - with a bonus:
Come sing with us in Cuba in 2017!
Sydney-based auditioned chamber choir Coro Austral has another interesting and exciting year's program planned for 2016, with performances and workshops at the Third Australian Jewish Choir Festival in March, a concert in May about the many facets of Exile, a performance and Latin American workshop at the Blackheath Choir Festival in August, and a concert to celebrate the Dia De Los Muertos , (Day of the Dead) in October.
We perform a cappella as well as with guest artists (instrumentalists, solo singers, actors, dancers, etc), and our repertoire of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American music ranges across all the usual "mainstream classical" forms from the 14th/15th century to the present, including Latin American Baroque, as well as music from other traditions such as Catalan and Basque, choral tango, Andean folkloric, contemporary Chilean, and Cuban songs from the Buena Vista Social Club (film). We also perform Sephardic music (of the Jews expelled from Spain in 1492), works by contemporary Australian and US composers, songs in Hebrew and Yiddish, and much more.
Everything we do over the next two years will culminate in a trip towards the end of 2017, to take part in the International Festival De Coros - Santiago De Cuba. Although not very well-known outside of Central and South America, this is one of the longest standing and most prestigious events in the choral calendar, and provides a really stimulating cultural and musical experience.
