SYDNEY’S SPECIALIST SPANISH AND LATIN AMERICAN CHAMBER CHOIR

Under the direction of founding conductor Margot McLaughlin, Coro Austral is an auditioned chamber choir which performs 13th to 21st century music from Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries as well as treasured choral music from around the world.
Formed in 2010, it has introduced much previously little-known choral music to Australian audiences. In 2017 Coro Austral toured Cuba to great acclaim, and in April 2022 it gave the first Australian performance of Martín Palmeri’s Misa Tango.

Our next concert:
Coro Austral presents
Solamente Tango
3.00pm Sunday 28th April at Ashfield Town Hall
We are offering you something very special for our first concert in 2024!
Solamente Tango will be a celebration of tango in its many forms - sung, played and danced. We will be joined by some of the finest tango names in Australia: leading tango sextet Adelante Tango with guest artist, one of Australia's top Bandoneón players, Maggie Ferguson, and dancers from Tango Spirit, led by two of Australia's finest tango teachers, Jacqueline Simpson and Anthony Miller.
We are also delighted to welcome back as guest artists Colombian soprano Paola Monroy and pianist and tango specialist Thomas McCorquodale, who both performed with us in our popular Tango concert in 2022.
Coro Austral will perform a set of choral tangos, including tangos by Carlos Gardel, widely regarded as the ‘father of tango’ and the visionary Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla, who developed the tango nuevo style which revolutionised the tango by incorporating elements from jazz and classical music. Following this, we are excited to present the first Australian performance with a tango ensemble of acclaimed Argentinian composer Martín Palmieri’s Misa a Buenos Aires (MisaTango) . Our performance with Adelante Tango, together with Paola and Thomas, will bring the traditional Latin mass alive with authentic tango rhythms and harmonies.
After a short interval, the mood will change as we move to Milonga-style dancing with Tango Spirit, led by Jacqueline and Anthony and some of their top students. You will be invited to join in the dancing, or you may just enjoy the atmosphere created by Adelante Tango as they transport you to the gritty streets of Buenos Aires, led by the quintessential sound of Maggie's bandoneón!
And after the performance, ¡Vino y bocados! We invite everyone to join us for wine and refreshments.
All of this will take place in Ashfield Town Hall 260 Liverpool Road Ashfield, at 3pm on Sunday 28th April. We hope to see you there at this very special concert, and encourage you to book early as we expect this to be a very popular event!
